Prom night is a great excuse to get dolled up for an evening of dancing and good company. Most people, boys included, look forward to their prom for months, even years! But particularly for girls, prom is an exciting night because it's fun to plan where you're going to shop prom dresses, what kind of shoes you're going to wear, and how you want to do your hair. And while there are a ton of options when it comes to dresses, shoes and designer prom accessories, it's often difficult for girls to choose the right hairdo. You may then, be surprised to hear that there are hundreds of different ways to wear your hair. If you want to stand out from the crowd, do something a little different, or just look extra chic, there is a style out there for you.
The updo: An updo is when the hair is gathered versus falling freely. Wearing your hair up certainly has its advantages. If you plan on dancing a lot, having your hair off your shoulders will help you stay cool. Also, if you're wearing a dress that has a pattern or a lot of sequence, you may want to wear your hair up so it doesn't make your ensemble too busy. Updo's consist of classic coifs including French twists, braids, buns, or ponytails. You can fasten your hair with elastic hair bands, bobby pins or fancy clips. Spray a bit of hairspray on your hair before you leave for the evening so everything stays in place.
Curls: Curls are a great way to make your ensemble look extra elegant. You may even want to curl your hair before putting it in an updo. This gives hair more texture and adds volume to your coif. If you plan on leaving your hair down, curls will add voluminous body to your look. Secure them with good quality hair spray that isn't too sticky. Curling your hair and then putting it half-up is also a very elegant twist on the traditional updo.
Accessories: The best way to make sure that you don't look like every other girl at prom is to add accessories to your 'do! You can add many different things to your prom hair including flowers, headbands, gems, and clips. Sometimes salons even offer hairspray that has a hint of glitter and, if sprayed, gives hair a beautiful sheen. Extensions are another fun option that allows you to wear your hair longer, or create streaks of wacky color. Many department and chain stores sell hair accessories, so if you find one that matches your dress and your personality, go for it!
Have fun with prom preparation, and when it comes to the hair, just plan ahead and be smart. If you live in a place that's always humid, you may not want to straighten your hair because it will frizz. Furthermore, if you see that the forecast for prom night is rain, you probably want to plan accordingly. If you plan on doing your own hair, practice before the big night to see exactly how it will look. If you're going to a salon, most of them will offer a trial session where you can go beforehand to get your hair done exactly how you want it on prom night. All in all, have a great time and enjoy every minute of your night!
